『WANTED KOREA』。

【Fans demand another
party with Korea as perfect hosts】Daily telegraph
By Henry Winter in Seoul (Filed: 24/06/2002)
A sleek bus with tinted windows and motorcycle outriders sped past the
thousands of Korea fans gathered outside the Seoul World Cup stadium yesterday
in anticipation of the team arriving for training. The light drizzle was
almost blown away by the gale of whoops and shrieks of delight as the bus
passed.
Out of sight, the coach disgorged its precious cargo, national treasures
like Hong Myung-bo, whose penalty knocked out Spain in the quarter-finals,
and the nation's darling, Ahn Jung-hwan, whose contract with Perugia was
cancelled after his golden goal humbled Italy.
Then came Hiddink, the coaching catalyst behind Korea's success and so
popular that Seoul dating agencies are swamped with calls from women desperate
to catch the Dutchman's eye. As coach and players headed off for training
in preparation for today's semi-final with Germany, even the riot police
broke off from look-out duty to applaud them.
As the Koreans made their way into the stadium, German training was winding
up. Oblivious to Dietmar Hamann and Miroslav Klose going through their
paces, an advance party of Red Devils, the official Korean fans organisation
that numbers 100,000 members, was busy pinning up a 30-yard banner declaring
"We Believe in You" to inspire the side. Cards will be placed
on seats, whole stands spelling out such messages as "Pride of Asia".
Orchestrated to start with, the emotion rolling in waves through Korea's
stadiums and out across the country now appears a spontaneous eruption
each time. It certainly fires up the players, who have taken to telling
each other "other teams may beat us technically and tactically, but
psychologically no one will get the better of us". The fans' force
is with the players.
The FIFA official who remarked that Japan is hosting the World Cup while
Korea is living it was correct. Along with 65,000 inside the ground, the
police expect one million to gather outside with a further six million
watching on massive screens. The rest of the nation will be transfixed
in front of the nearest television. Everyone craves the win that will send
Hiddink's men into a final being staged on Japanese soil.
"We suffered the harshness of Japan's colonialism for 36 years,"
said Hur Jin, spokesman for the Korean team. "If we can play in Yokohama,
even if we lose to Brazil there, it would still be huge humiliation for
Japan. For Korea's national flag to fly over a Japanese stadium would be
unbelievable. Victory in the World Cup would unify all the people in Korea
because there is turmoil in some provinces with cultural discrepancies
and economic problems.
"Our crowd are brilliant. For many ordinary people there was nothing
to enjoy. But then the World Cup came along and they hadn't known how exciting
football really is. They had only heard the rumours. We have brought it
to our people. Baseball has always been the dominant sport but football
is taking over.
"It's crazy outside our hotel as well as here. We have security guards
all around so the players will come to no harm but it is really noisy.
All of them are young women. They love the football players. They look
on them as rock-and-roll stars. They look on them like Michael Owen or
a sexy guy like Gabriel Batistuta."
But does a dark side cling to what Hiddink described as the "fairy-tale"
of Korea's advance to the final four? The latest charge levelled at a remarkably
fit side captained so stirringly by Hong is that the players' tea contains
something slightly stronger than milk and two sugars.
"We do drink red ginseng tea, that's true, and we feel it is good
for us," Hong said. "But our fitness levels come from our training
programme. We have trained very hard to be this fit." Prepared well
by Raymond Verheijen, their physical trainer, Korea do get stronger in
matches, their freshness helped by the decision to play no club football
since March.
Korea insist they are fuelled by nothing more potent than national pride.
"Nothing like that [drug-taking] goes on in our team," Hiddink
said. Of the 240 drugs tests by FIFA at this tournament, none has been
positive.
Refereeing controversy has also tainted Korea's progress with Italy and
Spain crying foul over decisions against them. "It was a loser's reaction,"
said Korea's forward, Lee Chon-soo. "When all the emotions have calmed
down, people should look inside their team as to why they lost," said
Hiddink of Italy and Spain. Hong insisted: "Our team's achievements
will not be overshadowed by such controversy."
But it is hardly surprising that FIFA have appointed an experienced quartet
of European officials for this semi-final. Amid the traditional tournament
conspiracy theorising, what can be said with some conviction is that inexperienced
linesmen, like the ones in the Spanish game, could easily have been swayed
by the noise and atmosphere.
Hiddink's thoughts were only of today. "The fear has gone. My Korean
players are always fighting to the end. We will go for it." The noise
will be akin to Galatasaray's crazy Ali Sami Yen times 10. On and off the
field, Korea's whole crusade seems like one long PR campaign to promote
themselves to the world as a dynamic nation. As long as the Germans do
not poop the party. |

brings more question marks】Times June 24, 2002

Spain 0 South Korea 1(aet; South Korea win 5-3 on pens)
SOUTH KOREA are in the World Cup semi-finals, but they do not deserve
to be there. After the boundless hospitality extended to visitors, it is
sad not to be able to share the excitement, yet the distortions of this
tournament cannot be ignored. When Hong Myung-bo struck home the decisive
penalty of the shoot-out, after Joaquin’s attempt for Spain had been saved,
the spine of this onlooker refused to tingle.
There was a numbness, a deflating sense that the officials had trumped
the footballers in determining who would face Germany in Seoul tomorrow.
Spain should have taken the lead shortly after half-time, when Kim Tae-young
glanced a free kick into his own net. Gamal Ghandour, the Egyptian referee,
disallowed it for a push or tug that no one else could identify.
It would be pious nonsense to pretend that the jubilation of the Koreans
is being sapped by such controversies, but they know something is amiss.
Although channel-surfers here find that the schedules are monopolised by
the World Cup, the footage of the injustices done to Spain never passes
before the eyes of even the most deep-rooted couch potato. One supporter
was not in denial. “Lucky team,” he said as he went past me.
In the second minute of extra time, the enterprising Joaquin outstripped
the defence and Michael Ragoonath, the assistant referee from Trinidad,
then ruled incorrectly that he had run the ball out of play before Fernando
Morientes headed home his cross.
When Italy deplored the unfairness of their own loss to South Korea,
they were not only denied sympathy in some quarters, but also chastised
as whingers. That was a facile attitude, considering the emotional devastation
for any nation that waits four years for its chance, then fails because
of the officials’ inadequacies. The departure of Spain may force people
to recognise that this is becoming the World Cup of historic mistakes.
South Korea, naturally, discern a different landmark in the first appearance
of an Asian side in the last four. Kim Dae-jung, the President, went so
far as to call the win his country’s happiest day since it was created,
according to mythology, 5,000 years ago. Guus Hiddink, the coach, bridled
at any reference to the unwelcome truth that Saturday’s emotional riches
had been pilfered from Spain.
“The losing team should look in the mirror, not to external circumstances,”
he said, with the glibness of success. The Dutchman would never be so dispassionate
if his own team were fatally mistreated. In reality, matches against the
tireless, brave South Koreans are much too hard for opponents to accept
that a valid goal or two will be disallowed. Spain know that they were
the better side in Gwangju.
“We all thought about what has happened at Korea’s games so far, but
we were not very concerned because you never feel that this kind of thing
can happen to you,” Fernando Hierro, the captain who will now retire from
international football, said. “But there were four or five decisions that
I found very difficult to understand. You want to believe that they can
be put down to human error, but I am not really sure about that.”
By some counts, South Korea have been spared five goals at the World
Cup by erring referees. Keith Cooper, Fifa’s director of communications,
has denied any conspiracy and he ought to be believed. It is the insidious,
unconscious influences that are the most worrying. Might the officials,
deep down, be as captivated as anyone else by the rise of South Korea and
the overwhelming atmosphere of their fixtures? Could a referee be loath
to write the last page of an enthralling story by finding against the team?
Tomorrow, Germany can only hope for a dispassionate, shrewd referee. |

【Red Devils promise
hell for Germany】英Yahoo! Sports Monday June 24, 08:55 AM
SEOUL, June 24 (AFP) - The Red Devils, South Korea's fanatical supporters,
have promised that Germany will get the shock of their lives when they
walk on the pitch for Tuesday's World Cup semi-final against the co-hosts.
Kim Yong-Il, head of the Seoul chapter of the Red Devils, said members
were working on a giant slogan that will "really shock the world".
Without giving away the message, Kim said it would be even more provocative
than the "Again 1966" card display that thousands of fans put
up in the second round match against Italy last week.
Italy's coach Giovanni Trappatoni complained the reference to Italy's 1-0
defeat by North Korea at the 1966 World Cup finals was intimidatory. But
FIFA insisted it could do nothing as long as there was no racism or threat
of physical violence.
The Red Devil's message of welcome for opposing teams has become one
of the biggest talking points at South Korea's matches. In the Group D
match against Poland it was "Win 3-0." For the United States
it was "Go Kor 16" -- an encouragement to reach the second round.
Against Spain in the quarter final, the Red Devils toned down the provocation
by declaring "Pride of Asia" which still captured the spirit
of South Korea's stunning progress through the tournament.
Red Devil leaders said the message for Germany will be kept secret until
the minutes before the semi-final in the Seoul World Cup stadium which
will be packed with more than 60,000 people.
"Our members are very tired as they have worked so many days and nights,"
said Kim Yong-il. "However, we get refreshment when thinking of Korean
players giving it their all. Our message this time will really shock the
world," he vowed.
The group said it takes between four and five hours for 200 Red Devils
members to set up the message in the stadium.
